Hoe nu? In de Verenigde Staten wordt de huidige President beschreven als een onbeschofte, onberekenbare narcist en seksist, terwijl Rusland wordt geregeerd door een dictatoriale man. Europese leiders tonen een gebrek aan visie en daadkracht, wat populisten de kans geeft om schade aan te richten. Ondertussen viert een aanzienlijk deel van de mensheid feest in stadions, op festivals en in danshallen
Waar heen? De diaspora van vluchtelingen naar de EU kwamen als verrassing, evenals de verkiezing van Trump en de overwinning van Brexit. Think Tanks bleken waardeloos. De menselijke waardigheid is labiel. Onbetrouwbare wetenschappers: Pachauri, Gore en Jones met te stellige uitspraken over de klimaat- verandering. Stapel en Vonk met foutief onderzoek dat zou aantonen dat mensen, die vlees eten veel egoïstischer zijn dan vegetariërs. Ego- centrische bankiers: Groenink, Scheringa en Zalm respectievelijk overambitieus, misdadig speculatief en rond-uit onnozel. Liegende regeringsleiders: Clinton over verhouding met Lewinsky en zijn ambtgenoot Blair over massavernietigingswapens in Irak. Valsspelende sporters. Wielrenner Rasmussen met massaal dopinggebruik in de Tour de France. Sluwe weldoeners. Populaire disk jockey Jimmy Savile bleek een nare pedofiel te zijn geweest. Religies zoals het Jodendom, Christendom en de Islam hebben gemeen dat zij geloven in God, die bepaalt wat goed en kwaad is. De wil van God komt noodgedwongen tot de mens via de interpretatie van een tussenpersoon. Die boodschap is vervolgens weer door anderen verschillend uitgelegd. Zodoende is er een veelheid aan religies met ieder een eigen morele maatstaf. Dat verdeelt de mensheid. Kortom, gelovigheid splijt. Ethiek los van religie zou kunnen helpen. Eeuwenlang is veel denkwerk besteed aan autonome ethiek. Volgens het Utilisme is iets goed als het nut heeft. Het Kantianisme vindt dat een handeling niet moet worden beoordeelt op consequentie maar op intentie. Anderen zoeken het in het wereldlijke humanisme, filosofische naturalisme of de praktijk van oosterse religies zoals het Boeddhisme en Hindoeïsme maar dan zonder hun godsdienstige geloven te volgen. Er valt veel te zeggen voor de stelling dat moraal vooraf gaat aan godsdienst. Religie heeft daar een eigen interpretatie aan gegeven want zonder moraal zou religie zinloos zijn. Autonome ethiek is verankerd in de Universele Verklaring van de rechten van de mens.

Ethics without religion could help. For centuries, much thought has been given to autonomous ethics. According to Utilitarianism, something is good if it is useful. Kantianism believes an action should not be judged by its consequence but by its intention. Others seek it in secular humanism, philosophical naturalism, or the practice of Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism but without following their religious beliefs. There is much to be said for the proposition that morality precedes religion. Religion has given its interpretation to it because, without morality, religion would be meaningless. Kunst kent vele definities. De beste is “iedere uiting waarmee de schepper op originele wijze een verhaal wil vertellen dat intrigerend is voor buitenstaanders”. Het hoeft dus niet mooi, harmonieus of buitengewoon duur te zijn. Kunst moet ook uitdagen, grenzen verleggen, dwingen tot nadenken. Anders is het niet de moeite waard. Als oefening, een paar voorbeelden met persoonlijk commentaar (maar laat u niets wijsmaken door critici zoals Rudi Fuchs). Is het onopgemaakte bed van Tracey Emin kunst? Ja, het valt volledig onder bovenstaande definitie van kunst. Als Mario Merz een iglo namaakt van leisteen, is dat kunst? Nee, het is verre van origineel. Is de gigantische tuinkabouter met dildo van Paul McCarthy kunst? Ja, zie commentaar bij Emin. Maken Gilbert & George kunst omdat ze henzelf tot verhaal maken? Nee, daar is het verhaal te onbenullig voor en dus een volledige tijdsverspilling. Is de opgezette geit van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Robert Rauschenberg kunst? Mogelijk maar het lijkt meer op omhoog geschreven geldklopperij en is daarmee een goed voorbeeld van artistieke eindigheid.
Art has many definitions. The best is "any expression with which the creator wants to tell a story in an original way that is intriguing to outsiders." It doesn't have to be beautiful, harmonious, or extraordinarily expensive. Art must also challenge, push boundaries, and force you to think. Otherwise, it's not worth it. As an exercise, some examples with personal commentary (but don't let yourself be influenced by critics such as Rudi Fuchs). Is Tracey Emin's unmade bed art? Yes, it fully falls under the above definition of art. If Mario Merz makes an igloo out of slate, is that art? No, it's far from original. Is Paul McCarthy's giant garden gnome with dildo art? Yes, see the commentary on Emin. Do Gilbert & George make art because they make themselves the story? No, the story is too trivial for that and thus a complete waste of time. Is the stuffed goat by American artist Robert Rauschenberg art? Possibly, but it seems more like a money grab and is therefore a good example of artistic finality.

De moraal van de tekening is simpel. Zodra de verpakking belangrijker wordt dan de inhoud gaat het faliekant verkeerd. In populaire T.V. uitzendingen als “Make me Beautiful” en “Complete Make-over” ontstijgt het belang van de verpakking verre dat van de inhoud en zoiets kan niet goed gaan. Vroeg of laat zal de verpakking worden weggegooid en blijft de magere inhoud over. Het opgekalefaterde slachtoffer zal uit jaloezie worden platgedrukt tussen partner en nageslacht, die nog altijd behept zijn met flaporen, bierbuiken, hangtieten en jubeltenen. Uiterlijke schijn wint steeds vaker van de concrete inhoud op alle fronten. Oorlogen worden met leugenachtige verpakking gerechtvaardigd; ellende en verderf zijn het logische gevolg. In veel landen worden de hoogste politieke posities bezet door mensen, die oogverblindende verpakking nodig hebben omdat hun eigen inhoud meer op een blik met wormen lijkt.
The moral of the drawing is simple. Things go terribly wrong as soon as the packaging becomes more important than the content. In popular TV shows like "Make Me Beautiful" and "Complete Make-over," the importance of packaging far exceeds that of the content, and such a thing cannot go well. Sooner or later, the packaging will be discarded, and the thin content will remain. The spruced-up victim will be crushed out of jealousy between partner and offspring, who are still afflicted with protruding ears, beer bellies, sagging breasts, and jubilant toes. Appearances increasingly win over concrete content on all fronts. Wars are justified with deceitful packaging; misery and destruction are the logical consequences. In many countries, the highest political positions are occupied by people who need dazzling packaging because their content resembles a can of worms.

Megalomanie wordt steeds meer de norm in de hedendaagse tijd waarin waardering alleen komt door grootser te denken en te handelen dan concurrenten. Kritisch denkend personeel wordt vervangen door jaknikkende whiz kids terwijl gigantische bonussen worden binnen geharkt ten koste van aandeelhouders, waaronder veel gepensioneerden. De megalomane smeerkees wordt vaak hoog geprezen en mag zich verheugen in de aandacht van een fraai exemplaar van het andere geslacht. De risico’s zijn minimaal. De gerechtelijke macht blijkt vaak tandeloos. Het grootste gevaar zit in de onbedwingbare drift om tot de laatste grijpstuiver te gaan, waarna de genadeloze uitglijer volgt.
Megalomania is increasingly becoming the norm today, where appreciation only comes from thinking and acting grander than competitors. Critical thinking staff are replaced by nodding whiz kids while gigantic bonuses are raked in at the expense of shareholders, including many retirees. The megalomaniac scoundrel is often highly praised and can enjoy the attention of a fine specimen of the opposite sex. The risks are minimal. The judiciary often proves toothless. The greatest danger lies in the uncontrollable urge to go for the last penny, after which the merciless slip follows.

Het instituut Monarchie is steeds vaker onderwerp van sociale discussie. In Engeland gebeurt dat al lange tijd. Het koningshuis daar wordt met grote regelmaat geplaagd door incidenten, vooral omdat de leden wereldvreemd in het leven staan. Koningin E II R stond bekend als afstandelijk van haar “onderdanen” maar ook van haar eigen kinderen. Charles gedroeg zich als kroonprins dusdanig dat er ernstig aan getwijfeld werd of hij ooit de kroon in handen zou krijgen. De Engelse pers haalde toen genadeloos uit met flagrante roddel over zijn liefdesleven met de paardrijdende Camilla en met zijn levensstijl met daarin een butler, die tandenpasta op de koninklijke borstel uitkneep. Daarenboven lekte Diana via haar butler gedoseerd naar de media over onverkwikkelijke ontwikkelingen. De wijze waarop de pers te werk ging leidde tot veel rechtszaken en uiteindelijk tot gedragsregels. Of die voldoende blijken te zijn hangt natuurlijk ook af van hoe gewichtig de leden van het koningshuis zich gedragen.

Veeteelt wordt driftig stimuleert door intensief gebruik van groeihormonen. Het groeiproces gaat hierdoor zo hard dat de dieren bij een beetje schudden al van hun botten afvallen. Door het eten van hormoonvlees kunnen ook bij mensen gezondheidsproblemen ontstaan. De vraatzucht maakt de mens echter blind voor de uitwassen van zijn gedrag en dat van de industrie. De gekke koeien ziekte, de varkenspest en het kippen virus halen met regelmaat de voorpagina‘s van de kranten en actualiteitsprogramma’s op de t.v. echter zo lang er maar niet aan een knuffeldier gezeten wordt is het hem allemaal worst.
Humanity is gorging itself and indulging in carnal pleasures. Huge quantities of animals are slaughtered. Nothing is left to chance in this process. The intensive use of growth hormones vigorously stimulates livestock farming. This accelerates the growth process so much that the animals fall off their bones with a little shaking. Eating hormone meat can also cause health problems in humans. However, gluttony blinds humans to the excesses of their behavior and that of the industry. Mad cow disease, swine fever, and the chicken virus regularly make the front pages of newspapers and current affairs programs on TV. However, as long as no cuddly animal is touched, it is all sausage to him.

Athletes strive to become famous by using dangerous performance-enhancing substances and bypassing controls. This can lead to serious health problems, while the viewer continues to believe that sports are healthy and can sleep peacefully.

Een groot deel van de samenleving heeft chronische angst om niet erbij te horen. Gespeend van ieder kritisch vermogen wordt driftig meegedaan aan trends. Deze onbenulligheid neemt in de loop van de tijd steeds andere vormen aan. Bijgaande tekening is eind tachtiger jaren gemaakt maar het beeld is nog redelijk actueel. In de vervuilde stad neemt een gestreste kantoormedewerker deel aan de fitnessrage, uitgerust met de nieuwste gadgets en meest recente uitdossing, terwijl hij zijn honden uitlaat en energie slurpende, luchtvervuilende terreinwagens ontwijkt. De meeste mensen vrezen het gevaar buiten de kudde, want ze zijn “liever laffe (blode) Jan dan dode Jan”. De wereld is toe aan minder kuddegedrag en meer lef.

Large part of society has a chronic fear of not fitting in. Devoid of any critical ability, people participate eagerly in trends. This triviality takes on different forms over time. The accompanying drawing was made in the late eighties, but the image is still relevant. In the polluted city, a stressed office worker participates in the fitness craze, equipped with the latest gadgets and the most recent attire, while walking his dogs and avoiding energy-guzzling, air-polluting SUVs. Most people fear the danger outside the herd, as they would "rather be a timid John than a dead John." The World needs less herd behavior and more courage.
